You're so happy! You're bringing your new baby home. Walk in, put the kitten on the floor, go turn the tv on and let the kitten explore! Wonder why the cat scratches the chair and couch, pees and poops everywhere, gets into the trash and on the kitchen counters? It is the way you introduce your new one to his or her new home.
Cats are smart and very clean animals, you need to go slow and walk him or her through the home showing the kitten where everything is, talking to him or her as you go. Talking is important so they know your voice and tone, they learn and respond to your voice like a baby does. Once you've shown kitten everything take some time with him or her and play for awhile. Kitten will start looking over their new home and be happy knowing if they need something they can go right to it.
Kitten will need a few things to keep him or her happy and healthy. we will start with a scratching post. The scratching post must be higher than the cat can stretch, so your cat can fully stretch out. There are different types of posts, cardboard or rope. You can find what you need at any pet store. To keep kitten from ruining your couch you must give them a special place for them only. A little catnip rubbed into the cardboard scratchers helps a lot. You can also get spray for your furniture to keep kitten from scratching everything up.
Next we move on to the litter box. Cats are very clean, and like their privacy like people do, so put the litter box in a room out of the way. Laundry room, bathroom, or under a counter, somewhere the kitten can feel undisturbed. We recommend an auto litter box. The box is more money at first but there is less cleaning and smell, no scooping, no mess. The clumping litter is also more expensive but you use much less and it will last you much longer.
Food and water! Very important!! You drink stale water, you get sick! Same as your kitten! Fresh water twice a day in a metal bowl not plastic. Plastic bowls scratch when cleaning and germs grow in the scratches and are hard to clean 100%. Same for your food bowl. Don`t let food sit in the bowl, It gets stale and dirty. Remove the bowl after feeding or get an auto feeder that keeps the food fresher and clean.
Toys and playtime are very important for your kitten and to help build that trust and bond between you and your kitten. Toys are not expensive, it can be a shoelace, feather, ball, stuffed mouse, or even a piece of paper rolled up. It`s your interaction that's important, dragging the shoelace on the floor, rolling the ball, tickling with a feather, you are the toy for the kitten and the kitten is your toy! A long love will grow very quicky for both of you.
Now the big one! Where does kitty sleep? You can buy nice bedding at any pet store, but in my fifty years with cats, I have learned they sleep when they want, and where they want. I have little beds at my windows, like a ledge, my cats sleep during the day in the windows or on the couch, so I have pillows on the couch as well. We recommend you leave the bedroom door open because a little kitten will crawl in with you, all our kittens sleep in bed with us until we are sleeping, then off they go to explore and play. Remember they are a baby and will be scared all alone in a new environment, they will want you next to them. They will follow you all over the house, and usally stay in the room you are in for the companionship. As they get older they get more bold and trusting.
Hope this will help make the experience with your kitten a special one. We love our babies like our children and want them to be happy in their new home. We want you to say this is my best friend ever!
